Voyager Ziwani Camp – A Jewel in the Tsavo West

Voyager Ziwani Camp – A Jewel in the Tsavo West

It’s Friday early morning, we meet up with the rest of the group ready for a weekend in the Tsavo.  Our destination, The Voyager Ziwani located in Tsavo West.   Despite having being given enough information on our destination, I was quite anxious about the trip. We were guaranteed of an adventured filled weekend by our host Voyager Ziwani and Uniglobe Northline travel that did not disappoint.

Getting There

There are several routes to the camp. We choose to take the Loitokitok route.  Loitokitok is 255 kilometers from the capital city of Nairobi and the border town of Kenya and Tanzania, south east of the city.

It is important to note that travelers should leave early morning due to the traffic jams along Mombasa road.  Our driver from Uniglobe Northline Travel snakes his way past Mlolongo town to Email along Nairobi-Mombasa highway, Emali being our first stopover.  We branch off to Loitokitok town, past Kimana gate.  The Kimana gate is the entry point to the famous Amboseli National park, at Kimana the view of Mount Kilimanjaro can be seen from a distance peeping through the skies.

We are told that on a good day, one can see the peak of Mount Kilimanjaro from Loitokitok.  We arrive at the border town, mid morning and branch off onto a dusty road at Rombo.  This is an hour and a half drive through the agricultural shopping centre of Rombo and Njukini.

The camp is located twelve (12) kilometres from Njukini Shopping Centre. A four wheel drive is recommended, due to the rough, off road, leading to the facility. As we approach the camp, we are welcomed by a herd of Zebras, Giraffes and Warthogs; our first game had just begun!

The Voyager Ziwani Camp

We arrive in the afternoon, and are welcomed by friendly staff.  There is a welcome drink for all guests on arrival, short briefing on what to expect at the camp while each guest checks in.  Our porter is quite helpful with our luggage as we settle in and get ready for lunch, an hour later.  The meals are light and mouth-watering.  There is a special vegetarian kitchen and a dedicated chef ensuring that all guests are well catered for.

The Voyager Ziwani has 25 tents, each with an en suite bathroom, a flash toilet, hot shower and well furnished safari tent.  The carefully chosen utility furniture can easily be picked; there are lovely bedside lamps, enough power sockets for all your electronic gadgets. I.e. camera, cell phone, tablets etc.

The verandah outside the tent opens up to the wild, and one can enjoy a lovely sunset or sunrise scenery right next to the river.  The main dining area and the bar (well stocked with local and international brands) face the dam opening up to the wilderness.

A quiet serene environment coupled with the whistling of birds, the sound of roaring Ziwa Dam waters located on the southern side of the facility are the main attraction of the Voyager Ziwani Camp.  The River is home to crocodiles, hippos and several species of birds

Activities while at Ziwani

The highlight of our first night is a guided night game drive that commenced after 7pm.  A blanket of black with sparkling stars coupled with the wild coming to life welcomes us to the night game drive. We are not lucky to see a lion this night but we managed to see herds of elephants, zebras, water-bucks, warthogs, Giraffes, Bush baby, hippos gazing from their natural home in the water, squirrels, Hyenas, antelopes, Dik Diks among others

Our evening ends with dinner round the camp fire before we can embark to bed.  The camp operates on generator that goes off after midnight to allow the wild animals to be in their natural habitat and all that is left is the lullaby of nature and the wild soothing you to sleep.
